What is The British Rig Owners Association?

The British Rig Owners Association (BROA) was set up in 1982 to provide rig owners and managers with a forum for the discussion of common interests and to facilitate industry co-operation with the UK Government, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and the European Community.

The founder members were the rig owning members of the Offshore Section of the UK Chamber of Shipping, and the Association continues to be based in the London offices of the Chamber of Shipping at Carthusian Court, 12 Carthusian Street, London, EC1M 6EZ.

Who it represents

Membership of BROA is open to persons or bodies corporate owning and/or managing mobile offshore units operating on a regular basis on the UK Continental Shelf.  Member companies operate both mobile drilling units and accommodation units.  Associate Membership is open to other bodies and organizations not registered in the UK but based in NW Europe and operating on the UKCS whilst Associates are those directly involved in offshore work such as consultants.

Details of the requirements for each grade of Membership can be obtained by contacting BROA.

The work of the Association is primarily technical, the Technical Committee being the principal action body, on which all members are represented.

The Technical Committee meets on a formal basis once each year, this Annual Meeting taking place in London in December. Additionally, the Committee meets as necessary - usually in Aberdeen - two or three times a year to consider topics of particular and immediate significance.  At other times, members are consulted by correspondence.

Close liaison is maintained with government - primarily the Offshore Safety Division of the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) - on all aspects of a regulatory nature with Technical Committee representatives regularly participate in HSE working groups and committees.

Internationally, BROA is represented on the UK delegations to the technical Sub-Committees of the IMO and has participated in the development of the IMO Code for the Design and Construction of Mobile Offshore Drilling Units and the standards of certification and training for key marine personnel on mobile offshore
